NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joined dignitaries from around the world at Westminster Abbey in London on Monday (19 September 2022) for the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Upon her passing, the Secretary General paid tribute to the Queen as a “a strong supporter of our transatlantic Alliance, our armed forces and our values.” He wrote: “Over more than 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II exemplified selfless leadership and public service.” He added: “I will always remember her wisdom and her warmth.”
While in London, the Secretary General met with His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Sunday. Mr Stoltenberg offered his deepest condolences to the King and Royal Family, as well as to the people of NATO Allies the United Kingdom and Canada, and of the Commonwealth.
Queen Elizabeth II knew and worked with all NATO Secretaries General since the founding of the Alliance. She visited NATO Headquarters and hosted Allied leaders at Buckingham Palace, most recently in 2019. In honour of Her Majesty, the flags of NATO and all Allied countries were lowered to half-mast at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
