The US government is not prioritizing anyone in Kosovo

First time after many years, the current US political leadership is balancing the Kosovo crisis without the exclusive favors of anyone. This was clearly seen in an interview with the US Deputy Secretary of State, David Hale last weekend after talks with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj and the President of the Kosovo Assembly Kadri Veseli.

“The essence of the final agreement in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia should be a mutual recognition between the state leadership of the Serbs and Albanians,” Hale said.

He stated that it depends only on the willingness of the top leadership in Belgrade and Pristina to do such a step that should contribute to peace and stability in the entire region. According to Hale, “political leaders in Kosovo and Serbia so far only wanted to show each other the strength, but now it’s time to show wisdom,” he added, not accusing either the Kosovo or Serbia for current closure of the negotiation process. Undersecretary for Political Affairs of the US Government has asked political leaders in Kosovo to be unique, emphasizing that it strengthens Kosovo position in dialogue with Serbia. When it comes to the most important issues – the suspension of Kosovo taxes introduced for goods from Serbia and the departure of US troops from Kosovo, Hale did not want to comment at all. He emphasized that the positions of the US and the EU are completely unique and harmonized. On the other hand, analysts in Serbia do not agree with this, as evidenced by the reaction of journalist Ljiljana Smajlovic. In her opinion, Hale’s appearance and his refusal to condemn more strongly the conduct of Kosovo’s leadership in an interview with Kosovo media suggest that Kosovo still has firm and undivided US support!
